In the final book of the Torah, Moses reviews, restates, summarizes, and directs the Israelites as they prepare to cross over into the land without him. He recalls events from earlier books in the Torah and shares his memories with the Israelites. In so doing, Moses establishes the pattern for the way Jewish religion and Jewish culture will remember. In this class, we will explore how the book establishes a memory form that not only valorizes history, but combines history and imagination to create meaning, the crucial task of any enduring culture.
