A Gift of Challah

Beth Emet is embarking on a new initiative called A Gift of Challah. Each Shabbat, someone signs up to bake challah in their home. The Klei Kodesh will identify someone in need of a little extra love–perhaps someone who is celebrating an accomplishment, or is ill, or had an especially challenging week. During Kabbalat Shabbat services, the Rabbi and Cantor will ask for a volunteer in the Sanctuary to deliver the challah during Shabbat to that congregant. Here’s how it works:

  • If you are able to bake two challot, one will be used for HaMotzi in the Sanctuary, and the other will be whisked off to brighten someone’s Shabbat.
  • You will need to deliver the gift of challah (or challot) in a paper or plastic bag to Beth Emet before 6:00 pm on Friday, or simply bring it with you if you are attending services!
  • There is no expectation that you will be the person delivering the challah to the congregant’s home, but of course, you can volunteer if you wish.
  • This doesn’t replace Shabbat Connections, which provides a homemade Shabbat meal each week to a different congregant.
  • For weeks when no one signs up, Beth Emet will provide a store-bought challah.

Here is the Sign-Up Genius form, where you may sign up for as many Gift of Challah opportunities as you wish; we’ll remind you a few days prior.
