The figures of Shammai and Hillel and the schools named after these figures are foundational to rabbinic Judaism. But what do we know about historical figures, and how can we distinguish fact from fiction? This class is two sessions, once on Friday, December 13, and the second on December 20, from 11:00 am – 12:00 pm. The cost of this class is $25 for members and $35 for non-members.
Barry Scott Wimpfheimer is an Associate Professor of Religious Studies and Law at Northwestern University. Wimpfheimer specializes in the study of Jewish Law and the Rabbinic Tradition, particularly in the Babylonian Talmud. His book The Talmud: A Biography was published as part of Princeton University Press’ Lives of Great Religious Books series in Spring 2018.
