In this talk, Dr. Maayan Hilel will trace key political and social developments in Israel from the Oslo Accords to the present day. Together, we will explore questions such as: How did the failure of the Oslo process shape Israeli society including Rabin’s assassination? What factors have driven the growing radicalization and polarization within Israel? How did the October 7th attack deepen existing divisions and affect Arab citizens of Israel? And finally, what does the current ceasefire proposal mean for both Israelis and Palestinians?
Dr. Maayan Hilel is an Assistant Professor in Jewish & Israel Studies and Assistant Director of The Crown Family Center for Jewish and Israel Studies at Northwestern University. She is a historian of the modern Middle East, specializing in the cultural and social history of Jewish and Palestinian societies, as well as guiding bi-national groups on issues of conflict resolution.
