Dear families,
I was heartbroken by the news earlier this week about the antisemitic attack during a Chanukah celebration in Sydney, Australia. There is far too much hate in our world, and to punctuate our Festival of Lights with this kind of darkness is horrific and devastating.
Children hear about news in many ways, and it is reasonable to respond authentically if they express feelings or questions. If you or any of our learners want to talk about this news or are holding big feelings, please know that I am available and will make time. Please email me at lreeves@bethemet.org.
There is no one right way to talk with a child about tragedies like this, particularly an antisemitic tragedy that affects the Jewish community. The best approach is to tailor your conversation to your child, knowing what is best for them in this moment. Let them lead with their own reactions and feelings.
Here are some resources that may help. Know that I and others at Beth Emet are here to support you and your family for individual conversations.
