Beth Emet Co-Sponsors Afghan Refugee Family

“We used to support Refugees because they were Jewish. Now, we support them because we are Jewish.”

– Mark Hetfield, HIAS-

In partnership with HIAS/JCFS, our Beth Emet Synagogue community is co-sponsoring the arrival of a family from Afghanistan in the New Year. We know that many members of the Beth Emet community will want to support this effort in some way.

There are many opportunities to be involved:

Help furnish an apartment! From sofas and dressers to mixing cups and cleaning supplies, we need to procure and deliver everything this family will need for a new apartment. Check our lists of new items for purchase and gently used items that we need and select an item or two that you can provide for the family. Note: Though our registry is at Target, items can be provided from other sources. Please note on the list which items must be new and which can be gently used.
Contact Kathy Kaberon if you purchase or want to provide something from a different source.

If you have large furniture items that could be donated to the family: living room, bedroom, or dining sets, rugs, lamps, and more: We are interested! As soon as we know more about the size of the apartment and number of family members, we will begin collecting these items.
Contact Kathy Kaberon if you have something that may work well for this family.

Be a mentor or tutor! Whether it is providing coaching in English, helping to navigate paperwork and websites, being a companion for grocery shopping, or navigating public transit, we need a team of volunteers who can make a three month commitment to help the family navigate a new city and culture.
Interested volunteers should contact Alison Finkel to learn more.

Learn More! If you only have a few hours to give, want to help with the apartment project, or you just want to stay in the loop, contact Alison Finkel to join the informal HIAS/Afghan Refugee volunteer team mailing list.

We look forward to sharing more updates in the New Year!
