“Be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy,” says Leviticus. What on earth (or out of it) does that mean? Maimonides and Nachmanides disagree strongly, and their disagreement reflects a deeper question over the degree to which the experience of God can be found within the strictures of Jewish law. We’ll look at their views and at some modern Jewish interpretations of holiness—a notoriously obscure idea, but one central to religious commitment.
