SUMMARY:Taste of Wise Aging Through the Lens of Tikkun Middot with Sue Nadel and Jane Weintraub
DESCRIPTION:Have you been thinking of retiring\, is your nest emptying\, are you facing age related challenges and moving from one phase of life to another\, are you sandwiched between generations? Do you have fewer stairs to climb professionally and more interest in making this next chapter meaningful? These and other issues will be addressed in a new Beth Emet offering: Wise Aging Through the Lens of Tikkun Middot. \nRegister for this event here \nMiddot encompasses a range of practices focusing on our personal characteristics\, traits or virtues. The study of Tikkun Middot uses curiosity and openness to investigate our internal and external reactions to situations. With this lens we will look at issues of aging and consider how we can turn towards choice points that create openings for personal and spiritual growth and turn away from reactive behaviors. \nDid we pique your interest?! If so\, please join us for a one time “Taste Of” Wise Aging Through the Lens of Tikkun Middot on Sunday afternoon\, February 5  at 2:00 pm during a zoom gathering where we will share more information about this upcoming class! \nIn the words of our group facilitators: \n\n“I am so excited that Jane and I can offer you the opportunity to access and blend the Tikkun Middot and Wise Aging knowledge and practices. I have participated in\, and co-facilitated both of these groups and they have become an integral part of my daily life. Now when I encounter daily or more difficult issues\, I have a “toolbox” rooted in Judaism that allows me to pause\, consider and make more mindful choices about my actions or decisions. These groups have truly made my life more compassionate and more whole.” Sue Nadel\n“I second everything Sue says! I too have both facilitated and participated in these groups and these practices have definitely enhanced my day to day life! Both Wise Aging and the practice of Tikkun Middot have opened me up to living more intentionally. … it’s an ever-unfolding process for me. I don’t think I’ll ever fully arrive\, but I’ll see so much more and experience so much more on the journey!” Jane Weintraub\n\n

SUMMARY:Visual Midrash? Decoding Medieval Jewish Art with Dr. David Shyovitz
DESCRIPTION:Pre-modern Jews are often described as “people of the book\,” but Jews produced visual art over the centuries as well – images in illuminated Bibles\, Mahzorigm\, and Haggadot that are complex\, often learned\, and sometimes deeply subversive. How might our understanding of Torah study shift if we accompany study of Jewish texts with study of Jewish images? \nMember fee $25 or included in Friday morning package; non-member fee $35 \nNon-Members Register Here \nMembers Register Here \nDAVID SHYOVITZ (PhD University of Pennsylvania) is Associate Professor of History at Northwestern University\, and Director of NU’s Crown Family Center for Jewish and Israel Studies. He is the author of A Remembrance of His Wonders: Nature and the Supernatural in Medieval Ashkenaz (2017)\, and has lectured widely throughout the United States\, Israel\, and Europe.

SUMMARY:What Makes a Family? Tools for Talking About Family Diversity
DESCRIPTION:Young children are actively navigating complex socio-political messages\, materials\, and experiences. Unfortunately\, misconceptions and stereotypes lead to negative implications for their sense of self and emerging family pride. \nIn this 2-part interactive series led by Ilana Dvorin Friedman*\, we will consider how cultural notions and assumptions about “family” can hinder their sense of belonging. Through ongoing discussion and storytelling\, grown-ups can support young children to embrace the beauty of all families. \nThis adult series is perfect for parents and grandparents of children from birth through 3rd grade. \nFree child-care activities are available. Please reserve your spot on the registration form. \nNon-Members Register Here \nMembers Register Here \n*ILANA DVORIN FRIEDMAN is the Early Childhood Policy Analyst at JUF.
