SUMMARY:MLK Jr. Shabbat Services
DESCRIPTION:Welcome Shabbat with our Kabbalat Shabbat Service! Whether in the Sanctuary or online! \nWe are delighted that our very own Matt Feldman will give the D’var Torah at services this Friday night for Martin Luther King Jr. weekend\, and members of the Second Baptist Choir will sing and enhance our worship experience. \nThe 5:45pm Oneg before services is being sponsored in honor of Matt Feldman and the Beth Emet Reparations Working Group. \nEvanston is the first municipality in the country to fund a reparations movement\, and Matt Feldman has been a leader in this effort since its inception. \nAfter retiring 5 years ago\, Matt wanted to continue promoting racial equity as he had championed in the workplace. He joined the Evanston Community Foundation’s (ECF) Board as Treasurer\, helped establish the non-profit fund for the Reparations Stakeholders Authority of Evanston\, and built relationships with Robin Rue Simmons\, Dino Robinson\, and Pastor Nabors. \nMatt chaired Beth Emet’s Reparations Working Group\, which developed a case statement about reparations\, raised funds\, and taught classes on systemic racism. Through his work at ECF and Beth Emet\, he was invited to the first global reparations meeting in Bellagio\, Italy. When Robin left the City Council to found First Repair—supporting local reparations initiatives nationwide—she asked Matt to join the Board as Treasurer. \nThis journey has been transformative for Matt. He’s met remarkable people and gained new perspectives on inequity that deepened his understanding. He’s grateful for the part he has played in this work of Tikkun Olam. Though the goals won’t be reached in our lifetime\, he wants his children and grandchildren to know he worked on the right side of history.

SUMMARY:MLK Day Walk for Warmth

SUMMARY:Bundled Blessings Social Justice Activity
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Social Justice Committee to package diapers for distribution to 21 local agencies working with families in need.  Bundled Blessings is a volunteer led effort spearheaded by a team at First United Methodist Church. Each month volunteers from the community sort and package 47\,000 diapers that go to 900 children in Evanston and surrounding areas. Diapers aren’t covered by either SNAP or WIC funds and yet there is a growing need among families affected by poverty. \nBeth Emet volunteers will meet at First United Methodist Church on January 21 at 6:30 pm for a tour of the facility and an overview of the program. Then we’ll get to work for the next hour. It’s a fun and important mitzvah activity that doesn’t require any money or diapering expertise! Just good will and the ability to count to 10! \nPlease sign up through this link to volunteer. \nContact Jessie Macdonald if you have any questions. Jess22mac@comcast.net

SUMMARY:Deuteronomy: The Jewish Memory Manual - CHANGED TO ZOOM ONLY
DESCRIPTION:In the final book of the Torah\, Moses reviews\, restates\, summarizes\, and directs the Israelites as they prepare to cross over into the land without him. He recalls events from earlier books in the Torah and shares his memories with the Israelites. In so doing\, Moses establishes the pattern for the way Jewish religion and Jewish culture will remember. In this class\, we will explore how the book establishes a memory form that not only valorizes history\, but combines history and imagination to create meaning\, the crucial task of any enduring culture. \nDavid Gottlieb is adjunct professor of Jewish Studies\, and former director of Jewish Studies\, at the Spertus Institute for Jewish Learning and Leadership in Chicago. He received his PhD in the History of Judaism from the University of Chicago Divinity School in 2018. \nMembers register here\n\nGuests register here
