SUMMARY:Our Siblings in Suriname: An American Jewish Community beyond Borders
DESCRIPTION:This lecture covers the history of the Jewish community in Suriname\, a Caribbean country in South America\, and one of the oldest existing Jewish communities in our hemisphere.  We’ll discuss its beginnings in slave society and into the twentieth century\, when Surinamese Jews\, many of whom had both African and European ancestors\, built a local revival\, and increased their bonds with the Jewish diaspora.  Perhaps Suriname is not some obscure locale\, but a lens through which we might see what makes the American Jewish experience both expansive and distinct. \nEli Rosenblatt is an Assistant Professor of Religion at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. \nMembers\, register here. \nGuests\, register here.

SUMMARY:Conversational Hebrew
DESCRIPTION:Conversational Hebrew meets most Sundays\, 11:00 am–12:00 pm when Beit Sefer meets. This class uses an Ulpan-like immersive setting to teach modern conversational Hebrew. Participants will read news articles\, discuss life and current events\, and other basic conversations in Hebrew. The only prerequisite is basic Hebrew skills. After completing her IDF service in the paratrooper unit\, she studied elementary education at Seminar Levinsky in Tel-Aviv. She holds a BA in Psychology from the University of Michigan and taught Hebrew language\, literature\, and religious studies in Michigan for 25 years.

SUMMARY:Tikkun Middot through the Senses
DESCRIPTION:Tikkun Middot through the Senses will explore the power of creativity as a tool for our own personal renewal and spiritual connection. Using writing\, image making\, music\, movement and prayer\, we will explore how the obstacles and opportunities present in each moment of our lives impact our choices and actions. No prior experience is necessary – just a willing heart and an openness to new avenues of expression.  If you’ve thought about embracing your inner muse with a stance of curiosity\, then this va’ad (group) is for you. \nTikkun Middot–meaning measuring or perfecting positive soul traits such as loving connectedness\, humility\, patience\, gratitude\, and silence–is a process of exploring our inner resources with curiosity and balance as its cornerstones. Through short meditation\, study\, exchange of ideas\, and creative exploration\, each session will help guide the va’ad towards an understanding of how we each act and react in the world. \nThis group is open to new seekers or those already rooted in the practice of Tikkun Middot. We will meet once a month for six months beginning in October through March in person at Beth Emet on Sundays\, 1:00 – 3:00 pm in the Weiner Room.  The group will be limited to 12 participants. Participants will develop Hebrew reading proficiency while exploring the vocabulary\, structure\, and themes of Shabbat worship services and prayers. She has held leadership positions in major Jewish organizations\, including Project Otzma and the JCRC of Greater Boston.
