SUMMARY:Unite Against Racism
DESCRIPTION:Formerly Stand Against Racism \nMeet at Demster and Ridge (Southwest Corner) \nWe Unite Against Racism every day by raising awareness about the impact of institutional and structural racism and by building community among those who work for racial justice. \nYWCA’s annual Unite Against Racism (formerly Stand Against Racism) provides the opportunity for communities across the United States to unite their voices to educate\, advocate\, and promote racial justice. \nBeth Emet will join this effort with members of Evanston schools\, churches and organizations\, lining Ridge Avenue with signs and noisemakers and drawing the attention of passing vehicles and pedestrians. Our objective: to raise awareness of institutional and structural racism and the fact that Beth Emet stands against such injustice. \nShow your support! Unite Against Racism signs will be available for pick-up at YWCA Evanston/NorthShore\, Crowded Closed in Evanston\, starting the week of March 27\, until supplies last. You can also download and print your own 8.5×11 or 11×17 signs. \nAlso\, bring a noisemaker\, horn\, or bell to make some noise! \nMeet Up at 10:15 and then let’s stand united! \nAfter the Stand\, come to the YWCA\, 1215 Church Street (between Asbury and Ridge)\, and join social justice friends for a discussion and good cheer. \nFor additional information\, contact Bluma Stoler (617) 686-7659

SUMMARY:Laundering Antisemitism: Jews\, Identity Politics and the University with Professor Marc Dollinger
DESCRIPTION:Watch the Recording Here \nProfessor Dollinger will talk about what it’s like to be called a left-wing Jew while fighting antisemitism on a right-wing campus\, only to be called a right-wing Zionist when he fought antisemitism on a left-wing campus. Learn about two campus antisemitism fights that each reached the halls of the federal government\, made local\, national and international headlines\, and offer important insights into the role of the university\, the place of identified Jews on campus\, and the ways in which identity politics plays out in sometimes surprising ways. \n\nDR. MARC DOLLINGER holds the Richard and Rhoda Goldman Endowed Chair in Jewish Studies and Social Responsibility at San Francisco State University. He has served as a research fellow at Princeton University’s Center for the Study of Religion as well as the Andrew W. Mellon Post-doctoral Fellow and Lecturer in the Humanities at Bryn Mawr College\, where he coordinated the program in Jewish Studies. \nProfessor Dollinger is author of four scholarly books in American Jewish history\, most recently Black Power\, Jewish Politics: Reinventing The Alliance in the 1960s. He has published entries in the Encyclopedia Judaica\, the Encyclopedia of Antisemitism\, and the Encyclopedia of African American Education. His next project\, Laundering Antisemitism: Jews\, Identity Politics and the University traces his experiences as an identified Jewish (and Zionist) professor in the current political climate. \nDr. Dollinger is a past president of both the Jewish Community High School of the Bay and Brandeis Hillel Day School. Dr. Dollinger serves on the boards of the Jewish Community Federation and URJ Camp Newman. He sat on the California advisory committee to the United States Commission on Civil Rights\, was named Volunteer of the Year by the SF Jewish Community Federation\, and was awarded the San Francisco JCRC’s Courageous Leader award. \nProfessor Dollinger has spoken about his research on CNN’s Don Lemon tonight as well as the CNN-podcast “Silence Is Not An Option\,” the NFL Network\, ESPN\, and Germany’s National Public Radio. Just for fun\, Dr. Dollinger helped actress Helen Hunt learn about her Jewish roots on the prime-time NBC show\, “Who Do You Think You Are?”

SUMMARY:Kabbalat Shabbat Service and Dinner Celebrating Israel's 75th Anniversary
DESCRIPTION:A Kabbalat Shabbat evening celebrating Israel at 75!  A festive Israeli-style Oneg Shabbat in the lobby prior to services at 6:00 pm\, followed by Shabbat services (both in-person and LiveControl) with a taste of Israeli music-infused. Special video greeting for Yom Ha’atzmaut from Rabbis Gabby Dagan and Naama Dafni Kellen of Shir Hadash in Haifa\, one of the oldest and most prominent Reform congregation in Israel. \nFollowing services\, come together as a community in person to enjoy a festive evening of delicious dinner\, uplifting music (and even dancing!) featuring Shakshuka. This will be a memorable evening you won’t want to miss! \n \nShakshuka is a Chicago-based band performing their unique brand of Israeli and Sephardic music spiced with jazz. “Shakshuka” is also the name of a Sephardic/Israeli food that is an eclectic and zesty blend of spices\, tomatoes and eggs\, and an appropriate metaphor for the band. Like the food\, Shakshuka’s music is a fusion of Israeli\, Sephardic\, and Mizrahi elements\, as it incorporates spicy musical accents of jazz\, Latin and rock. The result is a satisfying musical dish for all ages and tastes. \nDinner Cost: $22 per person \nMember Dinner Registration – Click Here \nNonmember Dinner Registration Click Here \nWelcome Shabbat whether in the Sanctuary or online! Masks are no longer required but are encouraged. There will be a masks-required section for those that feel more comfortable in the Sanctuary. \nTo listen to the service dial 847-869-4230 and press 7 \n

SUMMARY:Kabbalat Shabbat Services with Violins of Hope with May Birthday Blessings
DESCRIPTION:Violins of Hope\, is a project of concerts based on a private collection of violins\, violas\, and cellos\, all collected and restored since the end of World War II. Many of the instruments belonged to Jews before and during the war\, and many were donated or brought from survivors or family members\, some simply were found with a Star of David as a decoration. Each comes with an extraordinary story. This past Sunday\, the Beit Sefer (religious school) students were treated to an extraordinary concert and story of the Bielski violin\, which was owned by the Bielski brothers who held off the German Army and were able to recruit Jewish civilians and kept them concealed for three years in the Belarusian forest. This Friday\, during Kabbalat Shabbat services\, hear the music and stories of another Violin of Hope. You can learn more here. A special thank you to Ellen Feldman for bringing the project to Beth Emet. \nWelcome Shabbat whether in the Sanctuary or online! Masks are no longer required and are encouraged. There will be a masks-required section for those that feel more comfortable in the Sanctuary. \nAs this is the first Friday of the month\, we will be offering a birthday blessing to all our May birthdays! Here’s a list of all those who are celebrating! \nTo listen to the service dial 847-869-4230 and press 7 \n
