DESCRIPTION:In our gathering “Poems of Love\, War\, and Peace” will get a taste of Hebrew poetry by reading various poems of Israeli poets about central themes in Israeli existence that are forever intertwined. Dr. Hanna Seltzer will guide us through the reading and analyses of poems by prominent Israeli poets such as Yehuda Amichai and Dahlia Ravikovitch. All poems will be available in Hebrew and in English translation. \nHanna Tzuker Seltzer is an Associate Professor and the director of the Hebrew program at Northwestern University’s\, where she teaches advanced Hebrew\, Yiddish\, Hebrew literature\, and Israeli film. Raised in Jerusalem\, she has a BA in Hebrew literature and creative writing from Hebrew University and a PhD in Hebrew literature and Israeli film from UC Berkley. Hanna created a movie that won an award and was shown on Israeli TV. Hannah has been CEO of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs\, the Wisconsin Women’s Council\, the Chicago Foundation for Women\, and the Milwaukee Jewish Federation. She has been nationally recognized for her leadership in fighting for human rights and as a community organizer. She is now retired and living in Madison\, Wisconsin\, where she enjoys gramma duty as often as possible. \nThis event is free. Pre-registration is required. Classes explore Jewish values\, holidays\, Torah stories\, and Hebrew in a supportive and fun environment\, fostering curiosity\, community\, and connection to Jewish life. \nBeit Sefer meets Sundays for Kindergarten-2nd grade learners and Sundays and Thursdays for 3rd-6th grade learners. DESCRIPTION:Conversational Hebrew meets most Sundays\, 11:00 am–12:00 pm when Beit Sefer meets. This class uses an Ulpan-like immersive setting to teach modern conversational Hebrew. Participants will read news articles\, discuss life and current events\, and other basic conversations in Hebrew. The only prerequisite is basic Hebrew skills. After completing her IDF service in the paratrooper unit\, she studied elementary education at Seminar Levinsky in Tel-Aviv. She holds a BA in Psychology from the University of Michigan and taught Hebrew language\, literature\, and religious studies in Michigan for 25 years.
