SUMMARY:Gesher (Thursdays)
DESCRIPTION:Gesher (the Hebrew word for bridge) is designed to bridge the growth of our 7th grade students from children in the Jewish community to being adults. \nOur students spend this year advancing their understanding of Judaism as a religion\, community\, and culture as they begin the next stage of their Jewish identities. \nGesher’s goal is to help students identify their values and ways to live accordingly — an important skill at an age full of change. The Gesher curriculum explores the themes of peoplehood\, identity\, sexuality and relationships\, leadership\, spirituality\, and religious pluralism through a Jewish lens. Gesher is an environment that nurtures conversation. That’s why we spend this time exploring social issues including religious pluralism\, mental health\, technology safety\, and healthy friendships. \nA significant portion of the year is dedicated to learning and discussing issues relating to relationships\, their bodies\, and sex and sexuality in a safe and non-judgmental environment. Trained educators help facilitate age-appropriate learning and growth that goes beyond what is included in a public school’s education to more fully explore the spiritual and emotional elements involved in these issues. Utilizing lessons from the Our Whole Lives curriculum together with original content developed by Beth Emet educators\, students are prepared to make thoughtful and informed choices as young Jews. \nWe believe that seventh grade is a critical year in the development of identity both Jewish and otherwise. The Gesher program helps students and parents navigate what can be a challenging experience in a way that promotes the love of Judaism\, a sense of community\, and healthy relationships. \n*To accommodate for the time 7th graders spend studying for their Kabbalat Mitzvah outside of class\, Gesher meets slightly less often than Beit Sefer. \nEach of our teen classes encourage students to explore Judaism\, while thinking critically about their own roles and responsibilities in the world.\nWe approach social justice as an important lifelong mitzvah and aim to build skills to make a difference in the world.

SUMMARY:Beit Sefer (Thursdays)
DESCRIPTION:Judaic studies and prayer-based Hebrew instruction are taught for one hour each on Thursdays and Sundays. We use the Reform Movement’s Chai curriculum which is based on the fundamental pillars of Judaism: Torah (text)\, Avodah (worship)\, and Gemilut Chasadim (acts of loving-kindness). \nTogether with our Cantor and teachers\, students focus on specific aspects of the prayer service and engage in Gemilut Chasadim and Mitzvot that improve our world. Each grade level also focuses on age-appropriate aspects of the Jewish holidays as well as the people and land of Israel. Special events and programs for parents/caregivers with students are included throughout the school year.

SUMMARY:A Morning of Blessings with Rabbi David Teutsch and Marilyn Price
DESCRIPTION:Members Register Here \nGuests Register Here \nJudaism is blessed with Brachot (Blessings) for just about everything\, which makes us aware of our need to be grateful for the gifts we have been given. In 2017\, Beth Emet’s Marilyn Price\, storyteller/puppeteer\, author\, and educator\, partnered with Rabbi David Teutsch to create From Blessings to Gradititude and Back — a wise and useful guide to finding our way through these blessings and connecting them to ourselves. The blessings\, some 1500 years old\, are mostly familiar to us\, though some may be new and startling to discover. \nBeth Emet is fortunate to host Rabbi Teutsch\, who\, with Marilyn\, created Congregational Programming. Meeting in the sanctuary at 9:45 AM\, the Beit Sefer students will join their parents and other adult learning members of Beth Emet to begin their morning of blessings. \nAdults and teens will join Rabbi Teutsch in the Weiner Room\, and Beit Sefer will follow Marilyn for a morning of visual blessings—drawing\, creating characters\, and new blessings for our world. After our time\, we invite all the participants to view our art gallery\, admire our work\, and bless each other as we enter 2025! \n  \nDavid Teutsch\, a graduate of Harvard and Hebrew Union College (NYC) with a business degree from Pennsylvania University\, has had an impressive career as a pulpit rabbi\, as the director of the Reconstructionist Movement\, and then as President of the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College. His current activities include JStreet\, where he co-chaired the Rabbinic Council with Rabbi London and is an advisor to Rabbis and educators throughout the country. His published work includes editing the Kol Haneshmah series for the Reconstructionist movement\, a 3 volume series called A GUIDE TO JEWISH LIVING articles and papers\, and the book we will present at this program. He lives in Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania. \nMarilyn Price is an award-winning puppeteer and nationally recognized artist who has published many books\, taught extensively in adult education settings\, libraries\, and schools\, and created and directed the first Jewish family school in Wilmette. Her Alef Bet Primer\, which uses crafted puppets to teach\, is also used nationwide. She is a partner in TriBraining\, Inc.\, a not-for-profit educational foundation whose mission is to help teachers reach all learners creatively and with joy. The relationship between the authors began over 40 years ago when Marilyn served on the Board of Directors for RRC. Each of them considers their love of Judaism a profound gift and relishes sharing it with their ‘audience’ from the youngest to the oldest!
