SUMMARY:Understanding Current Israel Issues
DESCRIPTION:Beyond the headlines and generalities\, what are key issues for Israel really about? Our two speakers will provide insights on selected key issues\, with time for questions and comments. This program is for Beth Emet members and their guests and will take place in person at Beth Emet and be streamed to those participating from home. \nZack Selch is the Chair of the Israel Committee. Zach Selch grew up in Beer Sheva and served as a paratrooper during the First Intifada and the First Lebanon War. He later worked with the Prime Minister’s Office as an economic advisor to the Palestinian Authority during the Oslo Accords. Zack then spent over ten years working in Israeli high tech. Joel Hodes made Aliyah to Israel 10 years ago.  He and his wife split their time between Tel Aviv and Chicago\, spending a half year in each location.  Joel is an active protester\, often attending the weekly rallies held in Hostage Square and Kaplan St. in Tel Aviv.  Since the war\, Joel volunteers regularly to harvest agriculture on the abandoned kibbutzim near the Gaza border. \nMember registration

SUMMARY:Reengaging Psalms with Rabbi Michael Balinksy
DESCRIPTION:The biblical book of Psalms forms the foundation of much of Jewish liturgy. In this learning session\, we will explore Psalm 15 and ask “are we worthy to enter the gates?” Together we will consider how these ancient texts can speak to contemporary spiritual life and how studying them as literature can deepen the experience of prayer. \nRabbi Michael Balinsky has taught at Beth Emet for many years. He first came to Evanston in 1981 where he was the Hillel director at Northwestern for 20 years\, was next the Director of Faculty Development for Melton\, and then led the Chicago Board of Rabbis. Michael is a graduate of Yeshiva University. \nMembers\, register here. \nGuests\, register here. \n  \nBeth Emet uses budgeted funds and fees to support our adult education program. This year\, instead of individual registration fees for specific classes\, our goal is to secure $4\,000 in donations to cover our costs. Please consider an optional donation to the adult education fund when you register to help sustain our commitment to lifelong learning.
