SUMMARY:Interfaith Action of Evanston Annual Fundraising Dinner Honoring Beth Emet's Vision Keepers Matt Feldman & Alison Finkel
DESCRIPTION:This year we are honoring Matt Feldman for leading Beth Emet’s working group on reparations and Alison Finkel who was instrumental in leading efforts to sponsor the arrival of a refugee family from Afghanistan.  Read more below. \nMatt Feldman: The Beth Emet Reparations Working Group has developed communications\, educational materials\, raised donations\, and coordinated with other faith-based institutions in Evanston\, the North Shore and nationally in support of reparations as a way of contributing to repair the harm done to our Black brethren.  Matt Feldman coordinates the Working Group and supports local reparations in a number of other ways\, including supporting Robin Rue Simmons in her work advancing local reparations.  He worked as a banker\, consultant\, and entrepreneur before retiring in 2020.  He lives in Evanston with his wife and has two grown children. \nAlison Finkel: Last January\, members of the Beth Emet Social Action group partnered with JCFS/HIAS to sponsor the arrival of a refugee family from Afghanistan. More than 100 Beth Emet families supported the furnishing and setting up of an apartment in Skokie and a group of about 12 volunteers is intimately engaged with family activities like medical appointments\, school registration\, visa paperwork\, and much more. Alison is the lead coordinator of this group. Alison works in development at Northwestern University and is also the president of the board of Foundation 65. She lives in Evanston with her husband\, two kids\, a dog\, and a cat. \nProceeds from the Vision Keepers Dinner support Interfaith Action’s programs at the Hospitality Center for the Homeless\, local soup kitchens\, Producemobile\, winter overnight shelter\, and winter warming centers. \nRSVP by Monday\, September 12. \n\nAll reservations must be accompanied by payment ($75.00 per person) and send to Beth Emet\nFor questions about making reservations contact Bekki Kaplan.

SUMMARY:Dayenu Circle Meeting
DESCRIPTION:“The one thing we need more than hope is action. Once we start to act\, hope is everywhere.”\n-19 year-old climate activist Greta Thunberg of Sweden on Climate Change- \nThinking about a way to become more involved in addressing climate change? With Congress passing the most ambitious federal law yet to combat climate change\, now is the ideal time to join forces with Beth Emet’s Dayenu Circle\, as momentum builds to sharply lower our carbon footprint. \nLaunched last November\, our Beth Emet Dayenu Circle is part of the umbrella organization of the national Dayenu in Washington\, DC. Dayenu is a relatively new group seeking to combat climate change and other environmental concerns based on Jewish values. Since our Circle’s start up last November\, we have focused on meeting a number of goals that fall into three broad categories: education and awareness\, advocacy\, and “greening” our synagogue and homes. \nSome of the highlights of our work include the following accomplishments: \n\nLast April\, in conjunction with Earth Day\, we sponsored a Climate Action Shabbat that featured State Representative Laura Fine offering a compelling talk on climate change and mental health\, as well as a mini eco info fair with local environmental groups. .\nIn collaboration with a handful of other Jewish synagogues\, we co-led a Passover Climate Action at Fountain Square with 30 participants from across the Chicago area to protest Chase’s investing in fossil fuels Collectively.\nOur Dayenu Circle was one of a number of local groups that endorsed Evanston’s Climate Emergency Resolution\, which the Evanston City Council went on to pass unanimously in the spring..\nBeth Emet had a wildlife habitat landscape professionally designed and installed this spring\, and our Dayenu Circle assisted in the process of getting the landscape officially certified as a wildlife habitat by the National Wildlife Federation.\n\nStarting this fall\, we will be meeting once a month\, with our kick off meeting on September 20\, 2022 at 7 pm on zoom. Attend this meeting so you can learn more about Dayenu’s efforts and help us shape our goals for the coming year. SUMMARY:Soul Stitchers Potluck Dinner In The BE Sukkah!
DESCRIPTION:As the weather is not cooperating\, we are moving the dinner from the sukkah to the lobby. \nSoul Stitchers will be meeting in-person\, outside at the Sukkah. Please plan to bring a vegetarian entree\, salad\, side dish or dessert so we can share the meal with 8-12 people. A Challah and kiddush wine (as well as plates\, utensils and glasses) will be provided. Know how to knit and/or crochet? As a tribute to Nikki Zarefsky z”l\, join us for knitting and connecting as we create shawls to warm people during services and/or healing shawls that will bring warmth to those in need in a hospital\, home or other settings.
