DESCRIPTION:Author Riva Lehrer will lead us in a discussion of her book\, Golem Girl\, a vividly told\, gloriously illustrated memoir of an artist born with disabilities who searches for freedom and connection in a society afraid of strange bodies. This program will wrap up our February Jewish Disability Awareness and Inclusion Month. Although prior reading of the book is not required\, we encourage you to read it ahead of time if you are able. She is best known for representations of people whose physical embodiment\, sexuality\, or gender identity have long been stigmatized. Ms. Lehrer’s work has been seen in venues including the National Portrait Gallery of the Smithsonian\, Yale University\, the United Nations\, the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington\, DC\, the Arnot Museum\, the DeCordova Museum\, the Frye Museum\, the Chicago Cultural Center\, and the State of Illinois Museum. Lehrer’s memoir\, Golem Girl\, was published by the One World imprint of Penguin/Random House in October 2020\, won the 2020 Barbellion Prize for Literature; was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award; and shortlisted for the Chicago review of Books 2020 CHIRBY Awards. Ms. Lehrer is on faculty at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago\, and instructor in the Medical Humanities Departments of Northwestern University.

DESCRIPTION:Religious Action Center- Illinois (RAC-IL) 2022 Legislative Campaign \nBe Part of the Beth Emet Delegation at this important event! \nFor the current legislative session\, RAC-IL will work with the Illinois Coalition for Fair Housing to end source-of-income discrimination in housing. Currently\, landlords are able to turn away potential renters simply because they use housing vouchers\, Social Security\, alimony\, child support\, or other public benefits. The bill we are working to pass is HB2775. RAC-IL sees turning away rental applicants because of their source of income as a discriminatory practice. This practice disproportionately affects people of color\, seniors\, veterans\, single parents\, people living with a disability and people who rely on benefits. This practice is antithetical to our Jewish value that all people should be treated with dignity\, justice\, and respect. SUMMARY:Refugee Shabbat
DESCRIPTION:There will be a presentation\, on behalf of the Beth Emet volunteer committee\, about their experiences supporting and working with an Afghan Refugee family here in Chicago. The family arrived in January and is living in Skokie. They are a family of six\, two parents and four kids age 7\, 5\, 3\, and 18 months. (The attached photo is of a traditional lunch that the family has made for the volunteer committee!) It has been a profound and powerful experience – and one we look forward to talking about! \nIn addition\, our Director of Youth Engagement and four teens who have participated in Shoulder to Shoulder\, an online training program for future immigration justice advocates\, will be weaving words of introduction to some prayers throughout our Shabbat service.

SUMMARY:Purim Carnival for 4\, 5\, and 6 Grades
DESCRIPTION:Come one come all to BESSY’s annual Purim carnival! Planned and run by BESSY\, Beth Emet’s own high school youth group\, this event has something for everyone. To ensure physical distancing and to safely accommodate all attendees\, we have scheduled three separate times to attend the carnival. \nWristbands are $12 per child\, which includes unlimited games (and awesome prizes). Adults are free! All proceeds from the carnival benefit BESSY. All who attend must be vaccinated and masked at all times. \nGrades 4\, 5\, and 6 are invited to join at anytime during this timeslot. We will have a parent program during this time as well!
