SUMMARY:Conversational Hebrew
DESCRIPTION:Conversational Hebrew meets most Sundays\, 11:00 am–12:00 pm when Beit Sefer meets. This class uses an Ulpan-like immersive setting to teach modern conversational Hebrew. Participants will read news articles\, discuss life and current events\, and other basic conversations in Hebrew. The only prerequisite is basic Hebrew skills. After completing her IDF service in the paratrooper unit\, she studied elementary education at Seminar Levinsky in Tel-Aviv. She holds a BA in Psychology from the University of Michigan and taught Hebrew language\, literature\, and religious studies in Michigan for 25 years.

DESCRIPTION:In the final book of the Torah\, Moses reviews\, restates\, summarizes\, and directs the Israelites as they prepare to cross over into the land without him. He recalls events from earlier books in the Torah and shares his memories with the Israelites. In so doing\, Moses establishes the pattern for the way Jewish religion and Jewish culture will remember. In this class\, we will explore how the book establishes a memory form that not only valorizes history\, but combines history and imagination to create meaning\, the crucial task of any enduring culture. \nDavid Gottlieb is adjunct professor of Jewish Studies\, and former director of Jewish Studies\, at the Spertus Institute for Jewish Learning and Leadership in Chicago.
