SUMMARY:Discussion about the book Can We Talk about Israel - Part 2
DESCRIPTION:Join Rabbi London for a two-part discussion of the book\, Can We Talk About Israel? A Guide for the Curious\, Confused and Conflicted by Daniel Sokatch. \n  \nThe Jewish Book Council wrote this review of Sokatch’s book: “Can We Talk about Israel? is a supremely nuanced discussion of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict\, past and present. It is broad in scope yet detailed in analysis\, thought-provoking for the well-informed yet accessible for the new learner. It is an important and needed addition to the books on the subject. Sokatch is remarkably deft at holding multiple competing narratives at once.” \nOn March 17\, we’ll discuss the first half of the book and on April 22\, we’ll discuss the second half of the book. Daniel Sokatch will also be coming to Beth Emet this spring to talk about the book. The date is TBD. \nMembers Register Here  \nNon-Member Register Here \n\n

SUMMARY:Pursuing Peace in Israel-Palestine W/ Partners for Progressive Israel
DESCRIPTION:All too often\, religion is blamed for the political strife between Jews and Palestinians. Painfully\, right-wing fundamentalist actors in both Israeli and Palestinian society have grabbed for political power using religious language. People of both faiths have roles and responsibilities to play in the search for a just and peaceful solution to the conflict\, security for Israel\, and an end to the occupation. Join Partners for Progressive Israel’s Executive Director Rabbi Margo Hughes-Robinson and local multifaith partners for an engaging discussion about the tools faith communities can use to pursue peace in this turbulent moment. \nMembers register here \nGuest register here

SUMMARY:Social Justice Task Force First Annual Potluck Dinner and Honoring Lisa Levine

SUMMARY:Reading The News Through Jewish Eyes with Joel Brown\, Board Member of The Forward
DESCRIPTION:Member Register here \nGuest Register here \nSince the Hamas attacks of October 7\, \nAmerican Jewry has been inundated with domestic reporting and other media content regarding the war in Gaza and subsequent developments\, including rapidly increasing antisemitic incidents\, protests on U.S. campuses and elsewhere\, violence on the Lebanese border\, attacks from Iran and more. Many of us have found that coverage of issues critical to Jewish communities often presents skewed perspectives lacking nuance and context. Many of us also feel under constant bombardment by the never ending stream of difficult to absorb news. We may not be able to change the daily news\, but we can read the news with more critical eyes\, and we can improve the quality of our own media consumption. \n  \nJoel Brown \nWill lead an interactive discussion on the current role of Jewish American media in our country\, and how the foundational attributes of our own Jewish media can serve to expose the core drivers\, strengths\, weaknesses and limitations of U.S. mainstream media. He will also provide answers to the following questions: What makes journalism like davening? And why is the U.S. Supreme Court like a bowl of applesauce? Joel is a current board member of The Forward and serves on many of its operating committees. He is also a lifelong resident of Evanston\, a current board member of Camp Ramah in Wisconsin\, and a recently retired corporate attorney. \n
