SUMMARY:Being Jewish Faculty Faced with Anti-Israel Antisemitism
DESCRIPTION:How is it to be a Jewish Professor at a small campus facing hurtful antisemitic anti-Israel words and actions by a significant number of students and faculty\, which becomes worse after Hamas’ barbaric October 7 attack? What do you do? When your approach to art history is examining personal experiences to discern broad cultural implications\, how do you process such antisemitism? \nDavid Raskin\, Ph.D.\, is the Mohn Family Professor of Contemporary Art History at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He is the author of Donald Judd\, and has contributed to publications from the Tate Modern (London)\, Moderna Museet (Stockholm)\, MCA-Chicago\, the Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam)\, and Ca’Pesaro (Venice). His scholarship tells stories of art that probe personal experiences for the wider cultural implications. SUMMARY:Discussion about the book Can We Talk About Israel - Part 1
DESCRIPTION:Join Rabbi London for a two-part discussion of the book\, Can We Talk About Israel? A Guide for the Curious\, Confused and Conflicted by Daniel Sokatch. \nThe Jewish Book Council wrote this review of Sokatch’s book: “Can We Talk about Israel? is a supremely nuanced discussion of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict\, past and present. It is broad in scope yet detailed in analysis\, thought-provoking for the well-informed yet accessible for the new learner. It is an important and needed addition to the books on the subject. Sokatch is remarkably deft at holding multiple competing narratives at once.” \nOn March 17\, we’ll discuss the first half of the book and on April 22\, we’ll discuss the second half of the book. Daniel Sokatch will also be coming to Beth Emet this spring to talk about the book. The date is TBD. \nMembers Register Here  \nNon-Members Register Here \n

SUMMARY:What is Antisemitism? With David Shyovitz
DESCRIPTION:In modern political discourse\, “Antisemitism” is frequently invoked and infrequently defined. The imprecision with which the term is deployed leads to broad disagreements about the nature and scope of the phenomenon. Is anti-Semitism a form of racism? Of xenophobia? Of anti-religious animus\, akin to Islamophobia? Is it a conspiracy theory? Does antisemitism assume that Jews constitute a religion? A nationality? An ethnicity? A “race”? One reason these questions are so hotly contested is because they are usually discussed historically\, in isolation from the extensive academic scholarship on the origins and development of antisemitism—both the actual phenomenon and the descriptive term itself. In our sessions\, we will explore several historical case studies of anti-Jewish rhetoric\, violence\, and discrimination from antiquity through the present\, paying particular attention to the analytical concepts that historians have developed and deployed—including\, but not limited to anti-Semitism\, antisemitism\, anti-Judaism\, and Judeophobia. \n* This is a two part class that occurs on April 5 and April 12 \nMembers Register Here \nNon-Member Register Here \nDAVID SHYOVITZ (PhD University of Pennsylvania) is Associate Professor of History at Northwestern University\, and Director of NU’s Crown Family Center for Jewish and Israel Studies. He is the author of A Remembrance of His Wonders: Nature and the Supernatural in Medieval Ashkenaz (2017)\, and has lectured widely throughout the United States\, Israel\, and Europe

SUMMARY:Reading the Book of Nature: A Wordless Text of Wonder and Awe
DESCRIPTION:It’s no wonder the poetries and prayer\, even the liturgical calendar\, of Judaism\, inscribed by an ancient agrarian people\, would be punctuated with both early and celestial allusion and metaphor. It’s through the realm of all creation that humans first came to understand the divine\, and in this conversation with author Barbara Mahany we’ll explore the ways this timeless theology- known as The Book of Nature- invites us\, especially now\, into sacred encounter\, opens the door to awe and wonder\, and puts urgency to saving this imperiled planet. \nNon-Members Register Here \nMembers Register Here \nBARBARA MAHANY\, once a pediatric oncology nurse\, was a writer at the Chicago Tribune for nearly thirty years\, and is the author of five books. Of her newest title\, The Book of Nature: The Astonishing Beauty of God’s First Sacred Text\, it’s been written\, “if Slowing Time [her first book] was a field guide into the depths of your holiest hours\, The Book of Nature is a field guide to the depths of your holiest places.” Barbara lives in Wilmette\, along with her husband\, the Pulitzer Prize-winning former Chicago Tribune architecture critic\, Blair Kamin.
