SUMMARY:Understanding Israel Issues
DESCRIPTION:Members Register Here \nBeyond the headlines and generalities\, what are the key issues for Israel really about? Our two speakers will provide insights on selected key issues\, with time for questions and comments. \nZack Selch is the Chair of the Israel Committee.  Zach Selch grew up in Beer Sheva and served as a paratrooper during the First Intifada and the First Lebanon War. He later worked with the Prime Minister’s Office as an economic advisor to the Palestinian Authority during the Oslo Accords. Zack then spent over ten years working in Israeli high tech. \nJoel Hodes made Aliyah to Israel 10 years ago.  He and his wife split their time between Tel Aviv and Chicago\, spending a half year in each location.  Joel is an active protester\, often attending the weekly rallies held in Hostage Square and Kaplan St. in Tel Aviv.  Since the war\, Joel volunteers regularly to harvest agriculture on the abandoned kibbutzim near the Gaza border.

SUMMARY:The Arch of Titus and the Jewish Community of Rome with Judith Testa
DESCRIPTION:The Arch of Titus in Rome is redolent with Jewish history. It is best known for the relief sculpture on one of its inner walls that portrays sacred objects looted from the Temple in Jerusalem—most prominently\, a huge menorah. This class will consider motivations for building triumphal arches\, the rituals they embody\, and the Arch of Titus in detail: why it was constructed\, the meaning its sculptural decorations and inscriptions were intended to convey\, how that message impacted Rome’s Jewish community\, and how the message has been dramatically transformed over the centuries from a symbol of defeat to a symbol of survival and victory. \nJudith Testa received her PhD from the University of Chicago\, in Art History. She is the author of five books\, including one devoted to art in Rome. Since retiring from her position as a professor at Northern Illinois University\, she has authored several hundred articles about Italy as a staff writer for Fra Noi\, the monthly magazine of the greater Chicago area Italian American community. \nMembers\, click here to register. \nGuests\, click here to register. \n  \nBeth Emet uses budgeted funds and fees to support our adult education program. SUMMARY:Tikkun Middot through the Senses
DESCRIPTION:Tikkun Middot through the Senses will explore the power of creativity as a tool for our own personal renewal and spiritual connection. Using writing\, image making\, music\, movement and prayer\, we will explore how the obstacles and opportunities present in each moment of our lives impact our choices and actions. No prior experience is necessary – just a willing heart and an openness to new avenues of expression.  If you’ve thought about embracing your inner muse with a stance of curiosity\, then this va’ad (group) is for you. \nTikkun Middot–meaning measuring or perfecting positive soul traits such as loving connectedness\, humility\, patience\, gratitude\, and silence–is a process of exploring our inner resources with curiosity and balance as its cornerstones. Through short meditation\, study\, exchange of ideas\, and creative exploration\, each session will help guide the va’ad towards an understanding of how we each act and react in the world. \nThis group is open to new seekers or those already rooted in the practice of Tikkun Middot. We will meet once a month for six months beginning in October through March in person at Beth Emet on Sundays\, 1:00 – 3:00 pm in the Weiner Room.  The group will be limited to 12 participants. As you consider joining us – please first take a look at your calendar to make sure of your availability. \nSue Nadel and Jane Weintraub are excited to facilitate this creative journey\, in person only. Questions? Please feel free to contact one of us!  suenadel@comcast.net  jsweintraub@comcast.net \nClick here for guest registration. \nClick here for member registration.
