SUMMARY:Conversation: Traits of White Supremacy Culture
DESCRIPTION:Conversation and Havdalah \nThis program will take place outside at Beth Emet’s playground. \nContinuing our recent conversation at the racial justice training led by JCUA\, we are offering a deeper dive into everyday racism in our communities. This session will be led by BE members Michelle Oxman\, Paul Peterson\, Judy Caplan\, and Lisa Levine. \nThe goals of this conversation are: \n\nTo explore the norms of white supremacy culture*\nTo investigate how these norms play out at Beth meet and other communities we are a part of\nTo identify ways to counteract systemic/cultural norms and encourage personal change and growth\nTo create an accepting space to explore personal reflection and practice language related to racial justice\nTo strengthen our bonds as Beth Emet members through discussion and learning together\n\n*White supremacy cultural norms are not part of your personality but a result of being brought up in a white dominant culture. These characteristics don’t only impact us as individuals but also impact the institutions we are a part of. \nEven if you have not consistently been part of previous trainings or discussions\, you are welcome to attend and be a part of this group learning opportunity. \nNon-Members Register Here \nMembers Register Here

SUMMARY:Tikkun Middot and Elul- Stepping Stones to Inner Growth
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by: Marci Dickman\, Kathy Kaberon\, Barbara Stock\, and Dan Kaplan \nThe High Holy Days tend to take on a different meaning when we are intentionally reflective on our behavior throughout the year. We invite those who have engaged in Tikkun Middot practice currently or in the past to explore this topic together. Using Jewish texts and poetry\, journaling and chavruta conversations\, we will consider how we balance din (judgement) and rachamim (compassion) on ourselves and others as well as how we “really look at where we are/crack the shell open to make space” (Barbara Stock) for teshuva and growth. \nNon-Members Register Here \nMembers Register Here

SUMMARY:Dayenu Circle Meeting
DESCRIPTION:“The one thing we need more than hope is action. Once we start to act\, hope is everywhere.”\n-19 year-old climate activist Greta Thunberg of Sweden on Climate Change- \nThinking about a way to become more involved in addressing climate change? With Congress passing the most ambitious federal law yet to combat climate change\, now is the ideal time to join forces with Beth Emet’s Dayenu Circle\, as momentum builds to sharply lower our carbon footprint. \nLaunched last November\, our Beth Emet Dayenu Circle is part of the umbrella organization of the national Dayenu in Washington\, DC. Dayenu is a relatively new group seeking to combat climate change and other environmental concerns based on Jewish values. Since our Circle’s start up last November\, we have focused on meeting a number of goals that fall into three broad categories: education and awareness\, advocacy\, and “greening” our synagogue and homes. \nSome of the highlights of our work include the following accomplishments: \n\nLast April\, in conjunction with Earth Day\, we sponsored a Climate Action Shabbat that featured State Representative Laura Fine offering a compelling talk on climate change and mental health\, as well as a mini eco info fair with local environmental groups. .\nIn collaboration with a handful of other Jewish synagogues\, we co-led a Passover Climate Action at Fountain Square with 30 participants from across the Chicago area to protest Chase’s investing in fossil fuels Collectively.\nOur Dayenu Circle was one of a number of local groups that endorsed Evanston’s Climate Emergency Resolution\, which the Evanston City Council went on to pass unanimously in the spring..\nBeth Emet had a wildlife habitat landscape professionally designed and installed this spring\, and our Dayenu Circle assisted in the process of getting the landscape officially certified as a wildlife habitat by the National Wildlife Federation.\n\nStarting this fall\, we will be meeting once a month\, with our kick off meeting on September 20\, 2022 at 7 pm on zoom. Attend this meeting so you can learn more about Dayenu’s efforts and help us shape our goals for the coming year. We would welcome more voices and more hands in carrying out our work toward a more promising and healthier future for all of us and generations to come. \nStay tuned about our meetings either on the Beth Emet calendar (typically the 4th Tuesday of the month) or with updates in EmetMail. We also soon will be launching a new blog about how you can become more green at home Watch for The Greening Maven’s debut in October. \nFor more information on Dayenu\, contact: Sharon Smaller\, 847-651-0955.

SUMMARY:Israeli Government and NGOs Assist Marginalized US Communities with Assaf Grumberg
DESCRIPTION:Missed the event? Watch the Recording \nAcross the United States\, Israeli NGOs and government agencies are impacting the lives of marginalized communities. Whether it is through disaster relief\, post-trauma support\, or everyday necessities unavailable to those communities\, Israel is changing lives. We will explore some examples and learn what it is that makes these Israeli organizations leaders in their fields. \nThis program is co-sponsored by the Israel Committee and the Social Justice Committee. \nASSAF GRUMBERG\, StandWithUs Midwest Executive Director\, is an Israeli native and IDF officer. In 2010\, during the Turkish Flotilla incident\, Assaf witnessed a pro-flotilla anti-Israel demonstration on the Tel Aviv University campus. That event inspired him to change course from a career in finance to become a positive advocate for Israel on the global stage\, joining StandWishUs in 2013. In 2015\, Assaf was chosen as one of Chicago’s top 36 under 36 Jewish young Professionals.
