DESCRIPTION:The 2024 4th-5th Grade Shabbaton will be held December 14 – 15 at Beth Emet starting Saturday at 9:15 AM. \nMembers Register Here \nGuest Register Here \n  \nParents and 4th & 5th graders will come together at 9:15 AM to join the Kahal Shabbat morning service or a learner friendly Shabbat morning service. After reading Torah\, parents will participate in a D’var Torah (a teaching) and discussion with Rabbi London\, while 4th & 5th graders will have an interactive Torah Study session. Immediately following services\, families will come together for Shabbat lunch followed by family activities. \nAfter 4th & 5th graders wave goodbye to their parents and siblings by 2:15 PM\, it’s time for more fun and friend focus. Come ready to play games and watch movies with Beth Emet staff and high school madrichol! Don’t forget your ruach (energy)!\n\nGabriella Cooper\, Claire Schwartz\, and high school madrichol will stay overnight with the students. Pick up will be Sunday at 9:15 AM. There is Beit Sefer on Sunday\, December 15th\, but not for 4th & 5th graders who attend the shabbaton. \n\nPlease RSVP by completing this form by December 7th.\n\nThis Shabbaton costs $75 (check or billable to your Beth Emet account)\, which includes lunch\, dinner\, breakfast\, snacks\, and all the programming.\n\nFeel free to email Gabriella at gcooper@bethemet.org with any questions\, comments\, and concerns that you do not submit with this form.

SUMMARY:The Palestinian Citizens in Israel in Time of Crisis With Mohammad Darawshe
DESCRIPTION:Members Register here\n\n\n Guests Register here\n\n\nMohammad Darawshe will examine the main trends in Jewish-Arab relations in Israel and the implications of the October 7th events on the daily relations between the two sides. Mr. Darawshe is a leading expert on Jewish-Arab relations and has initiated many cross-sector Jewish-Arab partnerships\, which he will describe in his talk. \nMohammad Darawshe is Director of Strategy at the Center for Shared Society at Givat Haviva\, Israel’s oldest organization\, promoting cohesion and understanding between its Jewish and Arab citizens.  He holds a master’s degree in Peace and Conflict Management from Haifa University and is a Robert Bosch Academy Fellow and faculty member at the Shalom Hartman Institute in Jerusalem. Darawshe teaches at the University of Illinois Global Institute in Urbana-Champaign this semester. \nHe has also served as a strategic advisor on initiatives for the Arab sector in the Prime Minister’s office\, as a Knesset parliamentary assistant\, as Elections Campaign Manager for the Democratic Arab Party and the United Arab List\, and as an elected member of the town council of his hometown\, Iksal\, near Nazareth. He lives with his wife and four children in Iksal and is a Muslim Palestinian citizen of the State of Israel. \nThis lecture is sponsored in part by the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Program in Jewish Culture and Society.

DESCRIPTION:Gesher (the Hebrew word for bridge) is designed to bridge the growth of our 7th grade students from children in the Jewish community to being adults. \nOur students spend this year advancing their understanding of Judaism as a religion\, community\, and culture as they begin the next stage of their Jewish identities. \nGesher’s goal is to help students identify their values and ways to live accordingly — an important skill at an age full of change. The Gesher curriculum explores the themes of peoplehood\, identity\, sexuality and relationships\, leadership\, spirituality\, and religious pluralism through a Jewish lens. Gesher is an environment that nurtures conversation. That’s why we spend this time exploring social issues including religious pluralism\, mental health\, technology safety\, and healthy friendships. \nA significant portion of the year is dedicated to learning and discussing issues relating to relationships\, their bodies\, and sex and sexuality in a safe and non-judgmental environment. Trained educators help facilitate age-appropriate learning and growth that goes beyond what is included in a public school’s education to more fully explore the spiritual and emotional elements involved in these issues. Utilizing lessons from the Our Whole Lives curriculum together with original content developed by Beth Emet educators\, students are prepared to make thoughtful and informed choices as young Jews. \nWe believe that seventh grade is a critical year in the development of identity both Jewish and otherwise. The Gesher program helps students and parents navigate what can be a challenging experience in a way that promotes the love of Judaism\, a sense of community\, and healthy relationships. \n*To accommodate for the time 7th graders spend studying for their Kabbalat Mitzvah outside of class\, Gesher meets slightly less often than Beit Sefer. \nEach of our teen classes encourage students to explore Judaism\, while thinking critically about their own roles and responsibilities in the world.\nWe approach social justice as an important lifelong mitzvah and aim to build skills to make a difference in the world.

This class will continue to develop Hebrew reading fluency while exploring the vocabulary\, structure\, and themes of Shabbat worship services and the individual prayers. This class meets a requirement for Adult Kabbalat Mitzvah. \nBluma Stoller is a Beth Emet congregant and a graduate of Columbia University and the Jewish Theological Seminary. She was the North American Director of Academic Affairs for Tel Aviv University and was the recipient of Hillel International’s Exemplar of Excellence Award for her commitment to social justice and tikkun olam. She has held leadership positions in major Jewish organizations\, including Project Otzma and the JCRC of Greater Boston.
