SUMMARY:Passover Food Drive
DESCRIPTION:The Tzedakah Committee is pleased to announce the 2022 Beth Emet Passover Food Drive. The purpose of the drive is to enable the clients of The Ark to keep Passover by collecting kosher for Passover foods and then donating the food to The Ark’s pantry. \nThere are two ways to donate: \n\nPurchase food from any grocery store and drop off donations at Beth Emet’s west entrance during business hours between April 1 and April 10.\nShop at Mariano’s (3358 W. Touhy Ave.\, Skokie) on Sunday\, April 10 between 1:00-5:00 pm and drop off the kosher food donations with our volunteers outside the front doors (signs and flyers will be available on site)\n\nThe Ark will gladly accept any Kosher for Passover foods\, however there is a particular request for the following items: canned or jarred gefilte fish; Rashi or Kedem grape juice; kosher for Passover cooking oil; kosher for Passover jelly; and macaroons. \nThe Tzedakah Committee is also soliciting volunteers for one-hour slots during our collection drive at Mariano’s Sunday\, April 10\, 1:00-5:00 pm. Volunteers will distribute flyers about the drive to interested shoppers or help transport collected food to The Ark. If you would like to volunteer\, please email Neal Shanoff or call 847-302-6332. \n

SUMMARY:*Postponed* Sabbatical: A Roadmap to Communal Equity and Eco-Sustainability with Rabbi Aryeh Bernstein
DESCRIPTION:This program has been postponed to Fall 2022. \nThis past Rosh HaShanah\, the Jewish calendar entered the sh’mita year\, the once-every-seven-years biblical sabbatical. While in our contemporary Western context sabbatical is generally a personal interruption of the work cycle\, for the Torah and Jewish law\, it is a societal institution. We will study core biblical texts about sh’mita and some rabbinic texts\, enabling us to reflect on economic and ecological justice implications we might learn for today. \nMember fee $15\, or included in Friday morning package; non-member fee $25 \nZoom Link\n\nPh: 312-626-6799 | Meeting ID: 825 3183 2183 | Passcode: 1224 \n\n\nMember Register Here \nNon-Members Register Here \nRABBI ARYEH BERNSTEIN is the National Jewish Educator for Avodah; Educational Consultant for the Jewish Council on Urban Affairs (JCUA); and Staff Educator for the Jewish Institute for Animals (JIFA). He has spent years teaching Torah to communities across the U.S. and Israel\, especially on themes of social justice. A fifth-generation Chicago south sider\, Aryeh is very happy to return for a third visit to the Beth Emet adult education community.

SUMMARY:Kabbalat Shabbat Services with Rabbi Hanan Schlesinger from Roots
DESCRIPTION:This Shabbat join Rabbi Hanan Schlesinger\, Orthodox rabbi\, passionate Zionist settler and Director of International Relations for Roots\, as he shares his personal story and presents the groundbreaking and challenging grassroots work of Roots. He does not come with blueprinted peace plans in hand\, but with the deep conviction that human understanding and trust are the prerequisites for lasting justice\, freedom\, and peace in that little sliver of land they both call home. We are so grateful to have Rabbi Hanan speak this evening. Please note: Silvia Marjeyeh was supposed to join us as well but is unable to join due to COVID. \nPlease note\, Hanan will also be around after Kahal on Saturday\, April 2 to answer any questions. Please read more about Hanan below. \n\nAn Orthodox rabbi and passionate Zionist settler\, Rabbi Hanan Schlesinger has lived most of his life in the West Bank where Palestinian make up 90% of the population. Yet 33 years past until he first had a real conversation with a Palestinian.\nRabbi Hanan was profoundly transformed by his meeting and friendship with Ali Abu Awwad and with other Palestinians at the beginning of 2014. His understanding of the reality of the Middle East conflict and of Zionism was utterly complicated by the parallel universe that they introduced him to. Shaken and transformed\, Rabbi Hanan – together with Ali and other local Israelis and Palestinians – formed Roots\, the Israeli Palestinian grassroots initiative for understanding\, nonviolence and transformation to build bridges of reconciliation between the two sides. \n\nWelcome Shabbat whether in the Sanctuary or online! Pre-registration is no longer required unless you have yet to submit your booster information\, (which is required now) and sign the Brit (Covenant of Responsibility) by completing the online form. \nTo listen to the service dial 847-869-4230 and press 7 \nJoin Livestream
